“Who is afraid of non-identity, of non-recognition?”

ko se boji gubitka identiteta i nepriznavanja ?

-Helene Cixous

In relation to the history and displaced identities of New Belgrade, The Long Blank/Zaborav focuses on cultural camouflage, cultural amnesia and non-identity. In the beginning of 1950s, the working force from various parts of the former Yugoslavia were settling in New Belgrade, one of most progressively growing municipalities in that period.  With its Brutalist architecture, this area was criticized for being a "spavaonica" ("dormitory") because its lack of cultural and social life and was used mainly as a place for sleeping for its inhabitants.

In my work, I am interested in this process of forgetting and remembering, as individuals as well as collectively. When we dream and sleep, we temporarily forget who we are. How sleeping relates to one`s identity and sense of home is an interest in my work.

As an artist who is based in Berlin, was born and raised in Canada, with parents from Taiwan and Hong Kong, New Belgrade and the relatively new Blok 70, with its Chinese immigrant population, is a place of interest. What is the relationship of everyday objects from China and Serbia, or Germany and the EU and how does this affect the local culture? What kind of colours, forms, design, architecture are shared between these places? How can we use these consumer objects to create something new?

By using painting, drawing, video, found objects and various spontaneous actions and gestures, I would like to engage visitors and pedestrians in the gallery and on the street. Through the act of forgetting, and remembering, linking this place with other places, I hope the space for something new can be formed.

Takodje kako koriscenje ovih objekata moze dovesti do stvaranja neceg novog?

Koriscenjem slikarskih tehnika, video instalacija, nadjenih objekata i drugih spontanih akcija pokusacu da navedem posetioce galerije kao i slucajne prolaznike na interakciju i nadam se da ce se tim akcijama kroz sam cin zaboravljanja i prisecanja, povezivanja ovog mesta sa drugim mestima doci do stvaranja neceg novog.
